SPRI-05-010:  The Unfortunate Apartment Lackawanna County

Date: October 2005

Investigators Present:  Robin, Tom, Ali, Bill, Dawn, Molly and Kristen

The Unfortunate Apartment

The owner of this apartment building contacted us, with a question. Could there be a paranormal link connecting the deaths in this apartment? Yes, deaths, plural. Over the last 50 or so years there have been at least three, possibly four deaths in this same apartment.

The owner told us that the most recent death was a suicide. After the clean up the owner wanted to rent the apartment again and/or sell the building, and asked us if we were interested in investigating the apartment to see if we could determine any paranormal activity that may have contributed to the deaths associated with this apartment. Though there was never any reported paranormal activity, the owner felt that having the apartment investigated for any sign of the paranormal would give him peace of mind.

Upon further interviewing, we did find one person who visited the house often who said there were times when she felt like she had to leave, NOW! And when she felt it, she left.

For confidentiality sake the nature, dates, and manners of death for those who lived in this apartment are being withheld.

We were obviously intrigued by the nature of this apartment’s history and were eager to investigate.

OCTOBER 2005

On the night of the investigation, it turned out that the entire building was vacant. We were able to use the apartment above as our base of operations. Though not a small place, it was still an apartment and that meant that we wanted to keep the teams small (2or3) so that we wouldn’t trip over each other.

At that point SPRI did not yet own it’s surveillance system. All video was shot with camcorders with night shot.

Investigation:

  • Investigators tour the apartment and decide where to place the cameras.

  • Night shot camcorder is placed in the room where the suicide occurred (at this point the haz-mat team had removed the carpet and the drywall but the floor was still stained with blood). The camcorder faced the site of the suicide.

  • The team (Robin, Tom, Ali, Bill, Dawn, Molly and Kristen) and the owner meet in the other apartment to ready our equipment and interview the owner.

  • First team (Ali, Bill, Tom) sweeps the apartment for EMF’s and EVP’s asking specifically for the suicide victim to answer. The team also checks the basement. Pictures were also taken.

  • Later, the second team (Robin, Kristen, Molly) sweep the apartment for EVP asking for any spirit to contact them. Digital and film photographs were taken.

  • The camcorder is moved to the room where another death took place and is left to run for a while without interruption.

  • Team three (Tom, Ali) sweep for EMF/EVP in rooms other than the suicide room.

  • The camcorder is to be moved to yet another room but it is found to be off, even though the batteries where fine. The decision was made to turn the camera back on but leave it in the room where it was.

  • Lights on, pack up equipment.

  • Leave the unfortunate apartment.

Technical Review:

·         Photographic: Several photographs exhibited orbs. These orbs were decided to have been naturally occurring (ie: dust, reflections).

·         Video: No visual paranormal activity was captured on the camera. Initially the camera seemed to have lost time, that is showing that it recorded less time than it was actually in use. This was later disproved by comparing the recording time to our investigation log.

·         Audio: The circumstances behind the suicide and name of the suicide victim were known to SPRI. “John” was asked specific questions about his state of mind at the time of his death. “John” was also asked about his fiancée. No paranormal recordings were captured on the digital audio recorder or the video camera microphone, although background noise was a problem.

·         EMF: Although there were several mid range EMF’s, they were not deemed to be paranormal in nature. They were not repeated by multiple sweeps and no other phenomena occurred concurrently.

·         Debunking: There were no reported physical noises or movements of objects reported by the owner or captured by our equipment, therefore no debunking was performed.

Investigators Review:

This was the first investigation for Ali, Molly and Kristen and although they found it very informative they did not have any paranormal experiences. Such is often the case. Robin, Tom, Dawn and Bill did not report any paranormal experiences either. The owner did not enter the apartment during the investigation.

Investigation Status: The owner has expressed an interest in have SPRI investigate once again before the apartment becomes occupied.

The summary of the second investigation will be reported soon….
